We are getting more requests to implement OFBiz for manufacturing companies.
In general they are pleased with the functionality except for the production planning which is missing. Further there are fixed assets but they are not connected to the accounting system or asset maintenance. What is needed is a scheduler which plans the production runs looking at the last possible finish date and the available fixed assets (machines/equipment/tools) used in the runs. Question to the community: Anybody already looked into how to do the production planning in manufacturing? Regards, Hans |

Hello hans,
I have similar requests. Not as deep into it and I shall know more after next week. Ready to help :) Regards Carsten ------Original Message------ From: Hans Bakker To: [hidden email] ReplyTo: [hidden email] Subject: manufacturing component missing production planning Sent: Apr 10, 2013 07:59 We are getting more requests to implement OFBiz for manufacturing companies. What do you mean "there are fixed assets but they are not connected to
the accounting system or asset maintenance"? Fixed assets are "connected" to both. -Adrian On 4/10/2013 6:59 AM, Hans Bakker wrote: > We are getting more requests to implement OFBiz for manufacturing > companies. > > In general they are pleased with the functionality except for the > production planning which is missing. please look at:
https://backend.ofbizdemo.com/manufacturing/control/EditRoutingTaskFixedAssets?workEffortId=TASK02&USERNAME=admin&PASSWORD=ofbiz where you can enter fixed asset types without a fixed asset id. What does that have to do with accounting or asset maintenance?

Hi Adrian,
What are fixed assets in manufacturing: they are machines, tools etc owned by the manufacturer and available in limited quantities. In order to be sure that these assets which are used in a production run are available at the time the production run is operating and that they are registered in accounting for depreciation and that they are maintained in asset maintenance. you do not see that connection? when not, can you tell me the difference between the fixed assets in manufacturing and the ones in accounting? I know what fixed assets are. OFBiz does all of the things you describe.
The screen in your link has nothing to do with accounting or asset maintenance. So, I don't understand how it demonstrates that fixed assets are not connected to accounting or asset maintenance. -Adrian On 4/10/2013 8:52 AM, Hans Bakker wrote: > Hi Adrian, > > What are fixed assets in manufacturing: they are machines, tools etc > owned by the manufacturer and available in limited quantities. > > In order to be sure that these assets which are used in a production > run are available at the time the production run is operating and > that they are registered in accounting for depreciation and that they > are maintained in asset maintenance. > > you do not see that connection? > > when not, can you tell me the difference between the fixed assets in > manufacturing and the ones in accounting? > > Regards, > Hans > > > > On 04/10/2013 02:36 PM, Adrian Crum wrote: >> What does that have to do with accounting or asset maintenance? >> >> -Adrian >> >> On 4/10/2013 8:30 AM, Hans Bakker wrote: >>> please look at: >>> https://backend.ofbizdemo.com/manufacturing/control/EditRoutingTaskFixedAssets?workEffortId=TASK02&USERNAME=admin&PASSWORD=ofbiz >>> >>> where you can enter fixed asset types without a fixed asset id. >>> >>> Regards, >>> Hans >>> >>> On 04/10/2013 02:12 PM, Adrian Crum wrote: >>>> What do you mean "there are fixed assets but they are not connected >>>> to the accounting system or asset maintenance"? Adrian, we link fixed assets between the applications with the fixed

The idea of that screen is that you do not have to specify the exact fixed asset when you define a routing; instead you specify the "class of assets" that can be used for the task: this is the reason you see the type and not the id.

Thank you jacopo, since you are the original developer of the
manufacturing component, could you comment on my original posting? I did not design or implement the job shop and the asset planning/scheduling part (including routings and tasks) of the component, that is the focus of your post.

Hear, hear!
Hans, this is a feature not a bug. As you define a task, you want to specify a fixed asset type that is required, not a specific asset. The specific allocation of a fixed asset to a task should be part of the scheduling of the task, and if it's rescheduled the allocation can and maybe should change. Cheers Paul Foxworthy

To answer my own question for future reference:
currently manufacturing job scheduling is not part of OFBiz. alternative open source job schedulers are: http://www.frepple.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/openworkbench/ http://www.taskjuggler.org/ to which OFBiz could interface There is also no link between fixed assets in manufacturing and the fixed assets in accounting/asset maintenance, for the scheduler and for fixed asset maintenance that would be an advantage (amount of time the fixed asset was used) Regards, Hans On 04/10/2013 12:59 PM, Hans Bakker wrote: > We are getting more requests to implement OFBiz for manufacturing > companies. > > In general they are pleased with the functionality except for the > production planning which is missing. Hi Hans,
I guess you refer to something different/more than the functionalities Quartz provides? http://quartz-scheduler.org/ Else, we already discussed that and Quartz has until now been the preferred possible replacement for the current job scheduler. Which BTW works not so bad. If those below offer more (and better, I mean safer), how do you envision to use them? Thanks Jacques From: "Hans Bakker" <[hidden email]> > To answer my own question for future reference: > > currently manufacturing job scheduling is not part of OFBiz. > > alternative open source job schedulers are: > http://www.frepple.com/ > http://sourceforge.net/projects/openworkbench/ > http://www.taskjuggler.org/ > > to which OFBiz could interface > > There is also no link between fixed assets in manufacturing and the > fixed assets in accounting/asset maintenance, for the scheduler and for > fixed asset maintenance that would be an advantage (amount of time the > fixed asset was used) > > Regards, > Hans > > > On 04/10/2013 12:59 PM, Hans Bakker wrote: >> We are getting more requests to implement OFBiz for manufacturing >> companies. >> >> In general they are pleased with the functionality except for the >> production planning which is missing. No, Hans said a *manufacturing* job - like when you need to manufacture
1000 widgets. -Adrian On 4/23/2013 1:13 PM, Jacques Le Roux wrote: > Hi Hans, > > I guess you refer to something different/more than the functionalities Quartz provides? > http://quartz-scheduler.org/ > > Else, we already discussed that and Quartz has until now been the preferred possible replacement for the current job scheduler. Yeah, Hans is talking about the (complex) task of scheduling manufacturing jobs in order to optimally use assets required to complete the tasks.

OK, thanks Adrian, Jacopo,
I just had a quick look at frepple and I see what this adds to a simple scheduler like Quartz. BTW openworkbench has just a Windows UI Licenses: http://frepple.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/License/Main AGPL http://www.taskjuggler.org/tj3/manual/Intro.html GPL http://sourceforge.net/projects/openworkbench/ MPL Just to say Jacques From: "Jacopo Cappellato" <[hidden email]> > Yeah, Hans is talking about the (complex) task of scheduling manufacturing jobs in order to optimally use assets required to complete the tasks. > > Jacopo > > On Apr 23, 2013, at 2:20 PM, Adrian Crum <[hidden email]> wrote: > >> No, Hans said a *manufacturing* job - like when you need to manufacture 1000 widgets. >> >> -Adrian >> >> On 4/23/2013 1:13 PM, Jacques Le Roux wrote: >>> Hi Hans, >>> >>> I guess you refer to something different/more than the functionalities Quartz provides? >>> http://quartz-scheduler.org/ >>> >>> Else, we already discussed that and Quartz has until now been the preferred possible replacement for the current job scheduler.
