The patch only provides a solution for when the 'from-date' is not set, and sets it to now-timestamp. But what if the from date should be in the future? Is it not better to include the field in the entry form, so that the end user can set it?

Nice Thought Pierre, we can add from date and thru date in the create/update screen to set it via screen.

As this bug exists in branches as well then we can fix this as per the current implementation.
We can create new task for the from-date/thru-date related improvement for trunk.
