From my perspective, there are plenty of opportunities to improve the entity engine. Let's not throw away hope of making progress by focusing too heavily on the past.
The entity engine did not arrive in the project in its current state. Instead, it evolved over time. There have been other times when situations like this have come up and the entity engine was refactored to accommodate it.
So, let's do what we've done before - add another attribute to the datasource to control how the SQL for the function is generated.
